Is the Antarctic ice sheet growing?

Article Abstract:

What will happen to the Antarctic ice sheet as global temperatures increase cannot yet be forecast with certainty due to insufficient and contradictory data. An idea widely current among the public is that sea levels will go up as global warming releases the water now locked up in Antarctic ice. However, atmospheric and ocean circulation data suggest that the warming may generate greater precipitation over Antarctica that will cancel out any melting. Further research is necessary to clarify global warming's likely effect on the ice sheets.

Irregular oscillations of the West Antarctic ice sheet

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) may have occurred sporadically and chaotically during the last 1,000,000 years. An ice sheet collapse occurs when ice flow turns a partly grounded, partly floating ice sheet into an entirely floating ice sheet. The random nature of these collapses results from the slow equilibration time of the basal till's distribution. Attempts at forecasting new collapses due to global warming must incorporate the irregularity that has marked the collapse of WAIS in the past.

Ocean tides and Heinrich events

Article Abstract:

The study investigates whether tides could have been linked to Heinrich events for two reasons that include tidal controls on continental ice streams, floating ice shelves and ice-ages tides should differ from those of today. It suggests that these tides preconditioned ice streams and shelves for other preconditioned ice streams and shelves for other forcings, such as climate warning, sea-level rise or ice-streams instabilities, to trigger discrete Heinrich events.
