Isaac Asimov (1920-1992)

Article Abstract:

Isaac Asimov, biochemist and prolific author, died on Apr 6, 1992 at age 72. Asimov, who was born of Jewish parents in Russia in 1920, emigrated with his family at age three, eventually earned a doctorate in chemistry from Columbia University and then taught biochemistry at Boston University Medical School. However, Asimov achieved his greatest fame as a science fiction writer and a popularizer of science fact, publishing nearly 500 books by the time he died. Asimov's defense of science against pseudoscience and ability to explain difficult concepts will be sorely missed.

Peter Mitchell (1920-1992)

Article Abstract:

Peter Mitchell, English biochemist and 1978 Nobel chemistry prize winner, died of cancer on Apr 10, 1992. Mitchell's chief subject for research was the mechanistic relationships that link the metabolism of cells and the transport of solutes across cellular membranes. Moreover, Mitchell significantly expanded the conception of chemiosmotic processes. Mitchell, who was born in 1920 and received his doctorate from Cambridge University, achieved much in his field despite ill health and an active home life.
