Italy recruits new faculty under old rules

Article Abstract:

Giorgio Salvini, Italy's minister of research and universities, has appointed new people to fill up vacant posts, under the old rules because parliament delayed introducing new rules to take care of the corrupt practices in appointments. The delay has left many faculty positions vacant, causing problems in the universities. Protests from the public regarding the corruption have forced Salvini to propose changes in the existing system. The new rules, however, may not solve all the faculty recruitment problems.

Conservatives undermine Italy's university reforms

Article Abstract:

The university bill which has recently been approved by the Italian Senate is regarded by many observers as failing to deal with poor staff mobility between universities. This is seen as a key problem in the Italian university system, along with the important role played by personal connections in making academic appointments. At present, faculty members are appointed through centrally organized competitions, and this is regarded by many as having a negative impact on scientific competitiveness.

Berlin university shakes off radical past...

Article Abstract:

The Free University in Berlin is undergoing reforms to teaching and research excesses. The university has suffered from inward looking recruitment practices which weakened research, with the biology department suffering more than most. Teaching is now being improved and is evaluated on a regular basis, and the quality of research is being improved. Its internal structure now features fewer and broader faculties, and a new life sciences faculty encompasses chemistry, biology and pharmacy.
