Journal prices lead libraries to back less costly initiatives

Article Abstract:

The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), created in Oct 1997 by the Association of Research Libraries, is shortly to issue details of the first in a series of partnership deals with journal publishers. Publishers involved in these deals will make a commitment to offering high standard, inexpensive journals in areas where expensive journals currently dominate. In return, they will gain access to a guaranteed subscription base of research libraries. SPARC will also be active in encouraging support for the new journals from educational organizations, faculty and academic societies.

Library cuts bring tremors to geologists

Article Abstract:

The US Geological Survey (USGS) library currently faces an eminent reduction in the journal subscription and book acquisition expenditures to about half of its current spending as part of the proposed budget plan for maintaining the library. These evoked strong oppositions from the American Geological Institute (AGI), the geological scientists, earth science librarians, and other public users who benefit from the library's invaluable earth science research information. A factor for the budget reduction is the unresolved library funding disputes among the other divisions of the agency.

NRC backs open access to test-ban data

Article Abstract:

US National Research Council officials believe that scientists should be allowed to use test data collected under the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and that the National Academy of Sciences should provide more funding for test-ban monitoring. They do not agree that free use of sensitive information, such as that involving radionuclide data, will lead to premature, irresponsible or sensational reporting.
