Keystone Dialogue on private lands

Article Abstract:

The Keystone Dialogue was organized by the nonprofit Colorado-based group Keystone Center to find a solution to the problem of protecting endangered species in private lands. The focus of the event is the dilemma of landowners who want to protect imperiled species but who are prevented by federal regulations to profit from their properties at the same time. The remarkable thing about the dialogue is that proposed solutions were reached through the participation of all parties involved in the issue. The recommendations have been submitted to Congress and are now being considered.

Attwater's prairie chicken: the conservation challenge and recommendations

Article Abstract:

The Attwater's prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido attwateri) remains in serious danger of extinction, even though a range of initiatives have been implemented in an attempt to prevent further decline in its numbers. The population at the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is not using former booming grounds, and mortality levels are high. Research must focus on ways of encouraging natural breeding, as releasing captive-bred birds is only viable in the short term. Attention must also be given to ways of reducing high mortality among captive-bred birds.
