Let the spirits move you

Article Abstract:

More than 1,000 species of birds and 200 species of mammals can be found at the Manu Biosphere Reserve in Peru. Wildlife is so abundant in the area due to combination of abundant sunlight and lowland water where the Amazonia meets the Andes. Four groups of native peoples live in the Manu and one of them, the Machiquenga, is thought to have a greater knowledge of the wildlife there than any outsider. A television special on the area will be shown on the Discovery Channel in Oct., 1993.

Bonnie Raphael, zoo vet

Article Abstract:

The activities of Bonnie Raphael, a Wildlife Conservation Society vet, are described. The Wildlife Heath Center at the Bronx Zoo cares for ill, injured and newborn animals. The vets have to conduct a number of tests to determine the cause of the illness. The tests are similar to those used for humans and involve the use of instruments such as EKG and ultrasound. Some animals are examined in the wild.

Let them eat caviomorphs!

Article Abstract:

The nutria, a rodent native to Argentina, has overrun the Louisiana marshes since escaping from a private wildlife refuge. They now eat enough plant matter to destroy 20 square miles of coastal wetlands annually. Efforts to eradicate the nutria include promoting them as a fur-providing animal to trappers and as a tasty dish to restaurants.
