Limited carbon storage in soil and litter of experimental forest plots under increased atmospheric CO2

Article Abstract:

Research is presented describing the effects of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide on forest environments, in experiments conducted in forests in North Carolina. After three years of growth under conditions of increased CO2, there is evidence of carbon accumulation in the forest plots' litter layer, but the potential size of this carbon acculumation is constrained by rapid organic carbon turnover in these forest litter layers.

Fertile forest experiments

Article Abstract:

Long-term experiments are being conducted to discover the effects on forest growth of increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The experiments, which are known as the "Free air CO2 enrichment," or FACE, are conducted on a pine plantation built in 1993 at Duke University in North Carolina, as well as three treatment and three control rings constructed in 1996.

Soil fertility limits carbon sequestration by forest ecosystems in a CO2-enriched atmosphere

Article Abstract:

Research is presented describing how the sequestration of carbon in forests growing in increased amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide, is limited by soil fertility. Two experiments were conducted on maturing pine forest that were developed in North Carolina for the purposes of experimentation in CO2-enriched environments.
