Liquid versus photonic crystals

Article Abstract:

Busch and John have proposed the first marriage of liquid crystals and photonic crystals. As much as 40% of the proposed photonic structure is vacuum however. Spherical voids must be coated internally by the liquid-crystal molecules, to work correctly. Such materials may lead to light-emitting diode displays with pixels whose colours could be changed.

Mirrors contain an exceedingly large number of thermally excited atoms and they trap light and light exerts pressure on mirrors. The combination of these effects can be employed to cool tiny, flexible mirrors to low temperatures purely through the influence of incident light.
