Local control of information flow in segmental and ascending collaterals of single afferents

Article Abstract:

GABA releasing interneurons synapsing with intraspinal terminals of sensory fibres leading to the central nervous system in the vertebrate spinal cord, results in primary afferent depolarization and presynaptic inhibition. The local nature of presynaptic control has been studied using measurements of primary afferent depolarization simultaneously in two intraspinal collaterals. Results suggest that central mechanisms can affect independently the synaptic effectiveness of segmental and ascending collaterals of muscle spindle afferents.

High-frequency firing helps replenish the readily releasable pool of synaptic vesicles

Article Abstract:

Glutamatergic excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) have been recorded from the main neurons of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) in all or none form. A frequency-dependent depression in the amplitude of the EPSCs was observed when the presynaptic axon was stimulated with a 100-ms train at 100-300 Hz frequency. The mechanisms causing the short-term depression were investigated, and it was found to be largely due to rapid depletion of a readily releasable pool of vesicles.
