Luteinizing hormone and testosterone response of sexually active and inactive rams

Article Abstract:

The hormonal bases of variation in the sexual performance of rams was investigated. Luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) levels were measured in rams with low (LP) and high (HP) sexual performance after exposure to or interaction with estrous ewes. The results showed that LH secretion was not related to sexual arousal, copulation and ejaculation of HP rams, although exposure to ewes for 11 hours caused pulse LH secretions in HP rams. LH levels after injection of LH-releasing hormone did not differ between LP and HP rams. These results indicate that brief exposure to ewes do not affect LH levels in rams and therefore, LH levels do not influence sexual performance in rams.

Circulating concentrations and pattern of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone in circulation are changed by the circulating concentration of 17beta-estradiol in the bovine male and female

Article Abstract:

Implants containing the hormone 17-beta-estradiol (E2) were administered to gonadectomized cows and bulls to determine the influence of E2 on the serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations and patterns. Low E2 doses enhanced LH and FSH concentrations. However, higher concentrations significantly reduced the circulating concentrations of the LH and FSH. Estradiol effect on FSH levels was found to be greater in bulls than in cows.

Effects of exogenous estradiol-17 beta on luteinizing hormone, progesterone, and estradiol-17 beta concentrations before and after prostaglandin F(subscript two alpha)- induced termination of pregnancy and pseudopregnancy in gilts

Article Abstract:

Gilts were mated then induced to abort with prostaglandin F. Unmated gilts were given intramuscular estradiol to simulate pseudopregnancy. Both test groups received estradiol capsules. Blood samples were taken then gilts were given intravenous gonadotrophin releasing hormone. There was a preovulatory-like surge of luteinizing hormone in sham-treated gilts. This indicates that estradiol supplementation reduces capacity to return to estrus.
