Article Abstract:

France approved the Maastricht Treaty for European Union in Sep 1992 but this outcome failed to wipe away the widespread doubts about the Treaty. The British House of Commons' likely rejection of the Treaty will be a severe blow to the idea of a unified Europe. The Treaty is flawed by not providing for democratic institutions and by disregarding the economic destabilization likely to result from a unified European currency. Britain will have a chance to deal with these problems in 1993 when it will control the EC's presidency.

Article Abstract:

European unity requires the establishment of a unified trading block, which in turn requires a common currency. The Maastricht Treaty has serious flaws, including its ambiguity and the fact that it is neither a legal contract among nations nor a rousing statement of fundamental principles. Yet the Maastricht Treaty must be ratified because otherwise the momentum for European integration would falter.
