Magnetic field as a tracer of sheared gas flow in barred galaxies

Article Abstract:

The morphological type SBbc barred galaxy NGC1097 has been studied in a variety of spectral ranges. Polarized radio emission from NGC1097 could not previously be detected due to insufficient sensitivity. NGC1097 was observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) in 1996 and 1997 and polarized radio emission was detected at wavelengths of 22, 18, 6.2 and 3.5 cm. The regular magnetic field is thought to be frozen into the gas with field lines aligned with the flow. The ridges of enhanced total magnetic fields were found to coincide with optical dust lanes, but observations imply that the dust lanes do not mark the shock front.

Galaxies take the distance record: A pair of forming galaxies are now the most distant know objects

Article Abstract:

A Universe of very distant galaxies has been revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck telescope. The pair of galaxies are more difficult to see than quasars as they are less luminous. They are of interest due to their great distances and the gravitational lens effect whereby their images are magnified by the gravitational field of an intervening cluster of galaxies.

Old before their time

Article Abstract:

A report on the discovery of massive, evolved galaxies at much greater distances than expected is presented. This challenge to our understanding of how galaxies form is forcing researchers to explore new models of galaxy evolution with the help of the next generation larger telescopes that is due to come online.
