Magneto-electric Aharonov-Bohm effect in metal rings

Article Abstract:

Aharonov and Bohm predicted in 1959 that an electron's wavefunction's quantum-mechanical phase can be altered through electromagnetic potentials. This prediction was found to be correct by later researchers, who have found both electrostatic and magnetic effects. The magnetic effect has also been observed in metal rings of micrometer size, and this shows that the phase coherence of electrons is retained by electrons though they may have diffusive motion. Quantum interference affects electrons in these rings, and it has been measured in a new experiment.

Probing magnetism in the well

Article Abstract:

Quantum-well states occur when electrons are confined in a small space like ultra-thin semiconductor layers. Kawakami and colleagues have reported photoemission images of quantum-well states in copper thin films. The experiment involved modern sample fabrication techniques and a synchrotron radiation sources. Spatially resolved photoemission spectroscopy was used to observe the spin-polarized quantum-well states.
