Maine takes lead for Atlantic salmon

Article Abstract:

The state of Maine is undertaking a cooperative recovery effort to protect Atlantic salmon. The second of its kind to be approved for a fish species, the protection effort is supported by the state's Atlantic Salmon Conservation Plan, which was designed to protect the species against the effects of aquaculture, forestry, recreational fishing and other agricultural activities. The plan has been accepted by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service and was developed by a team that includes scientists, academics and the private sector.

Atlantic Salmon Watershed Collaborative

Article Abstract:

The Atlantic Salmon Watershed Collaborative is working to support Atlantic salmon conservation programmes in Maine. Its board, made up of 15 representatives from Federal and State agencies, industry and conservation organizations, has selected 10 schemes designed to analyze, protect and restore Atlantic salmon habitat or undertake related outreach. It is hoped that it will be possible to permanently protect significant parcels in the Atlantic salmon watersheds and to restore important areas of former Atlantic salmon habitat.
