Article Abstract:

Neil Gershenfeld and his team of engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have launched 10 fabrication laboratories called Fab labs around the world, from Norway, India, Costa Rica to Africa, which offer technical empowerment to students in developing world communities. These science labs together are showing that giving people the ability to make things for themselves can be the fastest way to solve their problems, particularly in communities with little access to education or technology.

China's response to bird flu is a mixture of secrecy and parsimony, which is not good for interests of its farmers or its people. China should start sharing the information about avian flu, make samples and genetic data for circulating strains immediately available and also learn to collaborate more openly.
