Making continental crust

Article Abstract:

The Earth's continental crust is a thick layer consisting mainly of andesitic rocks and contains a significant fraction of incompatible trace elements. Several models have been proposed to describe the composition, growth processes and mode of formation of the continental crust, particularly in the Archean period. These models have also been used as basis for describing the production of the present continental crust. A review of the processes that shaped the earth's crust and the methods used to analyze these processes are presented.

Recycling lower continental crust in the North China craton

Article Abstract:

Late Jurassic high-magnesium andesites, dacites and adakites from the North China Craton have chemical and petrographic features consistent with their origin as partial melts of eclogite that subsequently interacted with mantle periodotite. The lower crustal foundering occurred within the North China craton during the late Jurassic provides constraints on the timing of lithosphere removal beneath the North China craton.

Preservation of ancient and fertile lithospheric mantle between the southwestern United States

Article Abstract:

Research into the tectonic stability of cratons, the centres of ancient continents, is described. It is suggested that the thickness of the lithospheric mantle and the level of mineral depletion influence stability.
