Male Rio Grande Turkey survival and movements in the Texas Panhandle and south western Kansas

Article Abstract:

The survival and movement patterns of male Rio Grande wild turkeys at 1 Kansas, USA and 3 Texas, study sites were studied from January 2000 through August 2002 to determine if survival patterns were similar to those reported for other subspecies and if survival rates were related to movements. Study is presented to test the hypothesis that male Rio Grande wild turkey survival rates were affected by movement rates.

Rio Grande wild turkey habitat selection in the southern Great Plains

Article Abstract:

The habitant selection and the grazing plan of both male and female pastures of the Rio Grande wild turkey are discussed. It is concluded that the an appropriate grazing plan to promote turkey nesting habitat include grazing upland zones in the spring when it has little impact on nesting-site and grazing riparian zones following breeding season completion.

Aerial surveys for estimating wild Turkey abundance in the Texas rolling plains

Article Abstract:

A study examining the use of aerial surveys from fixed-wing aircraft to estimate Rio Grande wild turkey abundance is presented using inflatable turkey decoys at three study sites in the Texas Rolling Plains to stimulate Rio Grande wild turkey. Results concluded that fixed-wing aerial surveys are feasible on ecoregion scales.
