Male rock sparrows adjust their breeding strategy according to female ornamentation: parental or mating investment?

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted, with a yellow breast patch in a passerine species, the rock sparrow called Petronia petronia, to investigate the relation between male breeding strategy and a female ornament. The result reveals that the breast patch size was correlated with body mass, and double-brooding females and primary females of polygynous males had larger patches and higher breeding success than single-brooding and secondary females, respectively.

Males prefer ornamented females: A field experiment of male choice in the rock sparrow

Article Abstract:

The rock sparrow male mate choice is examined by reducing the size of the yellow breast patch of free-ranging females during formation period. The findings indicate that females with an experimentally reduced breast patch are courted less intensely and chased less frequently, than the control females and it is suggested that female ornamentation may be sexually selected in the species.
