Male traits, mating tactics and reproductive success in the buff-breasted sandpiper, Tryngites subruficollis

Article Abstract:

The within- and among-year developments in male mating tactics in the buff-breasted sandpiper, Tryngites subruficollis, were studied to determine whether individual characteristics among males can account for changes in the application of alternative mating tactics. The findings suggested that the males for a given population applies a wide range of alternative mating tactics and periodically modifies between tactics within and among mating seasons. The results also indicated that some males exclusively use one tactic, while the rest vary the tactics used.

Extrapair paternity in the common sandpiper, Actitis hypoleucos, revealed by DNA finger printing

Article Abstract:

A study to investigate the reproductive behavior of socially monogamous shorebird, the common sandpiper, using multilocus DNA finger printing is presented. An extra pair paternity is revealed in the bird and suggests an important role for rapid mate switching as a breeding tactic for some females.

Extrapair paternity and variance in reproductive success related to breeding density in Bullock's orioles

Article Abstract:

Research into the extreme range of breeding densities arising in a single, semicolonial population of Bullock's oriole, Icterus galbula bullockii, is presented. It was established that the variance in reproductive success among adult males was nearly four times greater at high than low density.
