Male mask size is correlated with mating success in the common yellowthroat

Article Abstract:

Research into social and extrapair mating success of male common yellowthroats with regard to mask size, premating song rate and body condition of males is presented. It was found that both social and extrapair mating success can affect sexual selection on mask size in these birds.

Males achieve greater reproductive success through multiple broods than through extrapair mating in house wrens

Article Abstract:

Male house wrens show three types of social mating behaviour and thus the male reproductive success can vary depending on the number of mates, the number of broods and the number of extra pair fertilizations. The males were more successful when they produced multiple broods during the season despite the paternity gained from extrapair fertilizations by single brooded males.

Male parental effort and paternity in a variable mating system

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to study the relationship between male parental effort and paternity in the white-browed scrubwren, Sericornis frontalis. DNA fingerprinting procedures were carried out using standard techniques while territorial groups were observed in pairs or multi-male groups. Results indicated that the proportion of young sired in the brood by alpha males correlated to the amount of time they spent near the fertile female.
