Mating behaviour in the cellar spider, Pholcus phalangioides, indicates sperm mixing

Article Abstract:

Individually marked cellar spiders, Pholcus phalangioides, belonging to a natural population were monitored to evaluate the validity of last-male priority in breeding in this species. Results of twice daily observations over a period of more than 100 days reveal that the predictions of the last-male priority postulate does not work in this spider species. Female attractiveness was found to be correlated with body size which was positively associated with the number of eggs laid. Sperm mixing is thought to occur in this species based on genital morphology and behavior.

Infanticide by males in a spider with suicidal maternal care, Stegodyphus lineatus (Eresidae)

Article Abstract:

The mating strategy of the male Stegodyphus lineatus spider involves a heavy cost for female spiders. The males may attack egg sacs so that females have to lay more egs using the attacking male's sperm. Females tend to take longer to replace eggs lost through infanticide and they lay smaller sacs, so suffer a fecundity loss. The females also suffer a reduction in survival time. Females seek to defend eggs from males and their success depends on what difference in size there is between the combatants.
