Measurement of the spatial coherence of a trapped Bose gas at the phase transition
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to make a direct measurement of the phase coherence properties of a weakly interacting Bose gas of rubidium atoms. This research involved probing the relative phase of the trapped gas between two spatially separated 'slit' regions. A double slit was created for magnetically trapped atoms using a radio wave field with two frequency elements. A second series of experiments measured the fringe visibility as a function of slit separation in order to establish the correlation function of the trapped Bose gas.

Article Abstract:
Research describing a Bose-Einstein condensation technique is presented. In particular the use of a microscopic magnetic trap on a chip for condensate formation is investigated.
