Mechanics of the kinesin step

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to show that the intrinsic directional bias in kinesin stepping, under very high backward loads, can be reversed such that the motor walks sustainedly backwards in an undescribed mode of ATP-dependent backward processivity. It is found that, in both cases the motor head diffuses into highly strained state, locks on to the track and then detaches at a strain-dependent rate.

The bipolar mitotic kinesin Eg5 moves on both microtubes that it crosslinks

Article Abstract:

The study shows that vertebrate kinesin-5 Eg5 drives the sliding of microtubules depending on their relative orientation. The results demonstrate how members of the kinesin-5 family are likely to function in mitosis, pushing apart interpolar microtubules and recruiting microtubules into bundles that are subsequently polarized by relative sliding.

The centromere geometry essential for keeping mitosis error free is controlled by spindle forces

Article Abstract:

A combination of laser microsurgery and chemical biology assays in cultured mammalian cells providing insight into syntelic chromosomes attachment is reported. Findings suggest that proper architecture of centromere plays a significant role to achieve high fidelity of chromosome segregation.
