Mellow mood fosters marijuana research

Article Abstract:

San Jose, CA, Democrat Jon Vasconcellos proposed a new legislature that would provide funding for research on marijuana abuse and prevention. The bill aims to provide $6 million in the span of three years to a research team supervised by the University of California. The law will also require physicians to provide oral recommendations for the use of marijuana instead of a prescription. Furthermore, the bill was also supported by the Office of National Drug Control Policy which will provide $1 million to fund the marijuana research conducted by the Institute of Medicine.

Roche and Promega back in court for Taq

Article Abstract:

A court in San Francisco is to hear allegations that the US patent for the enzyme Taq DNA polymerase, held by Hoffmann-La Roche of Switzerland was obtained fraudulently by original applicant, Cetus Corp. Promega Corp, which sells Taq under a licence granted by Cetus, is challenging Roche, arguing that Roche's Taq patent is invalid as Taq had been anticipated by earlier work. The dispute has continued for seven years, dating from Roche's purchase of the rights to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from Cetus.
