Modelling territorial behaviour of animals in variable environments

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to develop an individual-based model presenting the distribution and resource gain of territorial animals in situations in which the rank order of territory quality gradually changes. This model has been linked with an optimization approach to investigate the impact of habitat heterogeneity on movement and energy intake rates of animals in a hierarchy of competitive ability. A significant feature of the model is that populations occupying linear arrays of single patches will be clearly different from larger systems.

Guidelines for the use of animals in research

Article Abstract:

Researchers must weigh the benefits gained from using animals and its consequences for the animal. Investigators should abide by relevant legislation which are designed to protect the animals. The appropriate species and least number of subjects must be used without compromising the study. Infliction of pain or discomfort must be justified at all times. The researcher is also responsible for procuring animals from reliable sources and providing the appropriate housing and care.

Guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and teaching

Article Abstract:

The importance of behavioural studies in increasing one's understanding and appreciation of animals, is mentioned. The Ethical and Animal Care Committees jointly produced the guidelines for the use of all those who are engaged in behavioural research and teaching activities involving vertebrate and invertebrate animals
