Modulated phases and proton centring in ice observed by X-ray diffraction up to 170 GPa

Article Abstract:

Ice undergoes many structural changes between different crystalline forms under high pressure. Crystallographic studies have reached pressures of up to 20 GPa, but this does not allow the investigation of ice X, a symmetric ice. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction has been show to reveal the signature of hydrogen-bond symmetrization, measuring up to 170 GPa in a diamond anvil cell.

Neutron and X-ray diffraction study of the broken symmetry phase transition in solid deuterium

Article Abstract:

The experimental data on the structure of the broken symmetry phase in solid D2 compound, obtained by a combination of neutron and X-ray diffraction up to 60GPa, is presented. The finding states that the broken symmetry phase structure is incommensurate with local orientation order, similar to that found in metastable cubic para-D2.

Observation of an O8 molecular lattice in the e phase of solid oxygen

Article Abstract:

A single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected between 13 and 18 GPa are utilized to determine the structure of the epsi-oxygen. It was inferred that epsi-oxygen is characterized by the association of four O2 molecules into a rhombohedral molecular unit, held together by what are probably weak chemical bonds.
