Molecular basis of triclosan activity

Article Abstract:

Triclosan is used as a general antibacterial and antifungal agent and is found in many formulations. It has recently been suggested that it may block lipid biosynthesis by inhibition of the enzyme enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (ENR). A complex of ENR from the Escheric.ia coli bacterium has been analyzed and inhibition experiments undertaken, and triclosan was found to act as a site-directed and potent inhibitor of the enzyme by copying its natural substrate.

Drought sensitivity shapes species distribution patterns in tropical forests

Article Abstract:

Research has shown that differential drought sensitivity has shaped plant distributions in tropical forests at both regional and local scales. The results have indicated that niche differentiation with respect to soil water availability is a direct determinant of both local- and regional-scale distributions of tropical trees and the changes in soil moisture availability might alter the species distributions, community composition and diversity.
