Molecular redox switches based on chemical triggering of iron translocation in triple-stranded helical complexes

Article Abstract:

In a helical metal complex with three strands, iron (III) binds to the outer hydroxamate site while iron (II) prefers the inner bipyridyl site. The strands in the free ligand are randomly arranged but the addition of an iron atom to the complex twists the strands depending on the binding site. During redox reactions the atom switches sites in the molecule to form isomers of the compound with different spectral properties and color. These molecular switchings can be controlled by external stimuli and are similar to electric switches.

Molecular control over Au/GaAs diodes

Article Abstract:

It is demonstrated that molecules can control electrical properties of conventional metal-semiconductor junctions without electrons having to be transferred onto and through molecules. Diodes were modified by adsorbing molecules onto single crystals of n-type GaAs semiconductor. Diodes were produced with an effective barrier height controlled by the dipole moment of the molecule.

Controlled surface charging as a depth-profiling probe for mesoscopic layers

Article Abstract:

A method for examining the structure of material layers which vary in depth on a nanometre scale is presented. A novel technique for using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to profile depth simply is described.
