Molecular sexing of birds

Article Abstract:

The lengthy trial-and-error procedure of sexing a new bird species has become easier due to the identification of the universal marker for sex on the W chromosome, chromodomain-helicase-DNA-binding W-linked (CHD-W). It occurs in all birds except ostriches and their close allies. A section of CHD-NW, present in both males and females, and CHD-W is amplified by a pair of PCR primers. The amplified DNA is then cut with a restriction enzyme and the resultant DNA fragments are separated according to size through gel electrophoresis.

Characterization of a cancer cachectic factor

Article Abstract:

A 24K circulatory catabolic factor, isolated from an antibody, regulates cachexia in murine adenocarcinoma. Affinity chromatography with mouse mononclonal antibody followed by reverse-phase hydrophobic chromatography generates the 24K factor. The 24K motif contains N- and O-glycan chains, including glycosaminoglycans with sulphate residues. The factor is involved in pathogenesis of post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis and increases protein degradation in isolated gastrocnemius muscle.
