US seeks a big increase in wind power

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration is planning to encourage the use of wind as an energy source and aims to increase the amount of electricity produced by wind turbines to 5% by 2010, from the current 0.1% of the national total. The Wind Powering America programme will be financed by budget requests for the Department of Energy along with private-sector investments. The costs of wind power need to be reduced and the DoE is working with manufacturers to design lighter turbines and enhanced power-conversion systems.

Women scientists unite to battle cowboy culture: Developmental biologist Nancy Hopkins conquered the 'Wild West culture' of MIT, but other women are still fighting

Article Abstract:

Nancy Hopkins, a molecular biologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has struggled against a system which is stacked against senior women researchers. She investigated the problem and found a process that routinely resulted in the marginalization of senior women faculty. Her campaigning resulted in increased salaries, assistance in finding space and resources for their research, and a commitment by the institute to hire more women scientists.
