Mortality causes and survival rates of hunted and unhunted willow grouse

Article Abstract:

Little research has been undertaken into the effect of interactions between hunting and predation on the mortality rate of game birds during the year. A new study, conducted in a central Swedish mountain range, monitors 134 radiotagged willow grouse on contiguous nonhunted and hunted areas between 1992 and 1995. Some 100 mortalities were recorded, of which 40 were from raptor predation, 22 from hunting and 19 from mammalian predators. It is shown that, excluding hunting, causes of death in the three areas are similar and that hunting mortality is mostly supplementary to natural mortality.

Scaled quail use of different serial stages in the Chihuahuan desert

Article Abstract:

The scaled quail lives mainly in the Chihuahuan Desert of the southwestern US and northern Mexico, but the causes of the declining population are ill understood, although changes in the ecological condition of their rangelands may be partially responsible. A new study investigates the influence of mid- and late-seral upland sandy sites on scaled quail population. It is concluded that availability of protective cover and food sources are the main determinants of habitat and it is suggested that a mixture of mid- and late-seral plants will provide the best habitat for scaled quail.
