Mother-infant relationships in Japanese macaques: sources of inter-individual variation

Article Abstract:

A study of a large captive group of mother-infant dyads of Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata, shows that the quality of mother-infant relationship is affected by mother's age and matriline size. Rejection is common among mothers belonging to large matrilines, with older mothers being less protective of their infants. Mother-infant relationship remains unaffected by infant sex, maternal dominance rank and the number of immature offsprings, but is limitedly influenced by maternal experience.

Effect of strange male odour on parental care in lactating female mice

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effects of male conspecific odors on lactating female outbred mice behavior. Female Mus musculus domesticus, in the eighth day of lactation, were found to take longer periods in reaching their pups who are sending ultrasonic calls due to the presence of odors from a potentially infanticidal male. The time spent before the female mice reaches her pups is considered a type of parental investment.
