Multi-talented stem cells?

Article Abstract:

Hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow are responsible for generating a wide array of cell types. It has been further discovered that single stem cells cultured in a growth factor medium are able to recreate the bone marrow's microenvironment of hematopoietic stromal cells. Since there are many types of such stromal cells, this finding indicates that bone marrow stem cells have even more development options than previously thought. This has consequences for the pathogenesis of hematopoietic diseases.

Knowledge elites and class war: Would life be better if we left the difficult decisions to experts alone?

Article Abstract:

Knowledge has emerged as an important instrument of social separation in technologically advanced societies. The US legal process is one platform for the new class struggle between experts and non-experts, with the recent trend for allowing judges to screen expert testimony. It is important however to enhance, rather than curtail, the opportunities for conversation between science and society.
