New research chief faces multiple challenges

Article Abstract:

Australian Education Minister Amanda Vanstone has announced that Vicki Sara is to take over as chair of the Australian Research Council (ARC). Scientific bodies denounced the delay in making the appointment, but welcome the appointment of Sara, who has earned respect through her endocrinology research. Sara enters a highly-charged political atmosphere, with scientists anxious about the effects of ARC funding cuts. Sara will look at ways of alleviating the effects of cuts, but will also continue to press for improved funding. She is keen to improve the public profile of research.

A three-dimensional periodic table

Article Abstract:

A three dimensional periodic table that incorporates Hund's rule and the natural divisions of quantum mechanics uses the periodic number (n+1) for the third dimension. The traditional periodic table of the elements does not comport well with quantum mechanics, mixing energy levels within periods.
