U.A.E. franchise opportunities

Article Abstract:

Franchises are expected to increase by over 20% per year in the United Arab Emirates. In 1994 there were more than 60 franchise operations there, 85% from U.S. companies, including Baskin-Robbins, Pizza Hut, Federal Express, UPS, Tiffany and J.C. Penney. Expansion opportunities are best for all types of restaurants, as well as hardware, theme parks, eye care and many other industries. Only citizens are permitted to operate retail concerns. Foreign firms must find a local partner, most commonly using a master franchise agreement covering the entire U.A.E. The Second Annual Franchising and Licensing Exhibition will be held in Dubai, Nov. 14-16, 1995.

News of chews: the optimization of mastication

Article Abstract:

New research into chewing has made it possible to predict an optimum number of chews for any particular food. Tongue movements form pieces of food in the mouth into a bolus, the cohesion of which is determined by viscous forces. The bolus coheres more firmly as chewing continues, but in the later stages of the chewing process the particles in the bolus cannot pack together very tightly because of the presence of a large quantity of saliva. The bolus therefore collapses.
