No hormonal response in tied fights

Article Abstract:

A study on androgen concentrations fighting their own image in a mirror besides their aggressive behaviour towards a virtual intruder is presented. Results indicate that the hormonal reaction normally found in male contests is not caused under these circumstances by the act of fighting itself and hence it depends on the sole factor of relative fighting ability that cannot be delivered by a mirror image challenger.

Rank-related maternal effects of androgens on behaviour in wild spotted hyaenas

Article Abstract:

The androgen concentrations in wild female spotted hyaenas are higher during late gestation in dominant females than in subordinate females. Male and female cubs born to mothers with high concentrations of androgens in late pregnancy exhibit higher rates of aggression and mounting behaviour than cubs born to mothers with lower androgen concentrations.
