Nucleotide-dependent angular change in kinesin motor domain bound to tubulin

Article Abstract:

The structures of microtubules and tubulin sheets decorated with the motor domain head of kinesin in three states are studied using negative-stain electron microscopy. The observations reveal that a single kinesin head binding to a microtubule has a pear-shaped structure having a broader end toward the plus end of the microtubule and a similar orientation is seen in the non-claret disjunctional. A spike perpendicular to the microtubule axis in presence of adenosine 5-diphosphate in the kinesin head is discussed.

Crystal structure of the bacterial cell-division protein FtsZ

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to identify the crystal structure at 2.8 angstrom resolution of recombinant FtsZ, a protein of relative molecular mass 40,000, from the hyperthermophilic methanogen Methanococcus jannaschii. This protein has a GTPase domain and a carboxy-terminal domain arranged around a central helix. FtsZ's three-dimensional structure is similar to the structure of alpha- and beta-tubulin. It should prove to be a simple model system for microtubule dynamics.
