Numerical and demographic responses of Pumas to changes in prey abundance: Testing current predictions

Article Abstract:

A study conducted in southern Idaho and northwestern Utah has revealed that population of pumas depended on abundance of their principal prey, mule deer. Decline in abundance of mule deer resulted in exponential decline of puma population, reduction in kitten survival and decline in survival of female pumas, however female productivity was unaffected.

Cougar prey selection in a white-tailed deer and mule deer community

Article Abstract:

The role of cougar ( Puma concolor) predation in a white-tailed deer, mule deer and cougar community in northeast Washington, U.S.A., is examined. The results have shown that cougar predation on mule deer in Northeast Washington is density-dependent and as secondary prey, mule deer population recovery is doubtful in the absence of management changes.

Puma energetics: A recalculation

Article Abstract:

Allometric equation is used to calculate energetic requirements of pumas to estimate prey requirements for mule deer. A need for the reassessment of the impact pumas can have on deer populations are discussed based on the calculations.
