OTA panel opens inquiry into patenting of genes

Article Abstract:

A 17-member advisory panel, along with the congressional Office of Technology Assessment are still in a quandary over the policies the US should take in regard to gene patenting and the human genome project. There is a possibility that patent laws involving gene sequences will be modified to specify the particular uses of the gene or imposing restrictions on the time for which patents can protect them. This is in response to the possibility that present laws may result in stifling of research due to attempts of biotechnology companies to block the work of rivals.

Mood of space station partners lifts

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton has redesigned a funding proposal for the US' space partnership project with France and Japan. Clinton trimmed down the proposal to $10.5 billion over a five-year period to increase its chances for Congressional approval. The proposal has scrapped option C, but has sought to reconcile the features of modular space stations A and B. The space project will retain European support if it were converted inton an international project while Japan has already committed $2.95 billion to the project.

Accelerator-based tritium facility to win out over rival US proposals...

Article Abstract:

The US is planning to build a particle accelerator designed to produce tritium for its nuclear weapons and may be used for nuclear experiments. Hazel O'Leary, the energy secretary, could face opposition from certain quarters, proposing alternative programs, such as using a currently existing commercial nuclear reactor. Some rejected the proposal on technical and financial grounds but it has strong political backing. The project is to cost about $3 billion and does not need a nuclear reactor to be built.
