Oblique rifting in a slow-spreading ridge

Article Abstract:

Mohns ridge in the Norwegian Sea is oriented obliquely with respect to the direction of sea-floor spreading rather than at right angles to it as are most mid-ocean ridges. A new fault map based on Seabeam data confirmed this obliquity. Furthermore, experiments with brittle-ductile models that reproduced the ridge's lithospheric composition indicate that the ridge had a perpendicular orientation when the Norwegian Sea first opened 53 million years ago but that subsequent tectonic forces produced the obliquity.

Deep origin of mid-ocean-ridge seismic velocity anomalies

Article Abstract:

Seismic velocity anomalies in mid-ocean-ridges extend down 300 km in depth, not just 100 km as concluded by Y.-S. Zhang and T. Tanimoto. The shallower depth is not consistent with observed travel-time residuals for SS phase seismic waves. The deeper depth for velocity anomalies is given by a three dimensional model.

Spreading rate dependence of gravity anomalies along oceanic transform faults

Article Abstract:

A systematic study of the residual mantle Bouguer gravity anomaly of 19 oceanic transform faults that reveals a strong correlation between gravity signature and spreading rate is presented.
