Observation of magnetically induced transverse diffusion of light

Article Abstract:

The effect of an applied magnetic field (B) on the propagation of light through a disordered scattering medium is similar to its effect on the propagation of electrons. Light scattering experiments show that light passing through a glycerol and CeF3 medium is scattered in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the container and B. The scattering of light is dependent on the diffusion tensor (D). B produces an off-diagonal component of D that generates a magneto-transverse current density. The current density propagates parallel to B and the photon gradient.

Observation of magneto-chiral dichroism

Article Abstract:

Studies demonstrate the experimental observation of the enantioselectivity of the magneto-chiral optical effect which was previously predicted to exist. The finding could be crucial in considerations of molecular spectroscopy and the interactions between matter and light. The effects of magnetically induced optical activity and natural optical activity in chiral crystals are similar, with scientists having searched for a link between the effects for some time.
