On the use of surrogate species in conservation biology

Article Abstract:

This article attempts to clarify some of the confusions that surround conservation biologists' use of the terms surrogate species, indicator species, and umbrella species. Topics discussed include how biologists choose appropriate surrogate species, as well as the success of their choices in relation to the conservation goal.

Conservation medicine: the changing view of biodiversity

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on advances in microbiology and its influence on conservation medicine, or the study of animal and human health within an ecological context. The author argues that research on microbial ecosystems may be applicable on larger-scale ecosystems, providing information for management strategies.

Reliability of conservation actions based on elasticity analysis of matrix models

Article Abstract:

Research suggests that elasticity analysis of matrix models may be a problematic method when used to assist policy-making . Topics discussed include calculations that effect predictions of future population growth rates, and the range of variation these models are capable of predicting.
