Outsmarted by ants

Article Abstract:

Richard Feynman, the Nobel prizewinning physicist who died in 1988, used his experiments with sugar baits that involved ferrying individual ants from place to place on small pieces of paper, to know that the ants help each other and they can learn where to go to get food. There are probably 20,000 ant species and they do not all use the same navigational abilities while many can reorient on trials by using external cues, including landmarks and the position of the sun.

Teaching in tandem-running ants

Article Abstract:

The ant uses a technique known as tandem running to lead another ant from the nest to food with signals between the two ants controlling both the speed and course of the run. The results of this communication show that tandem running is an example of teaching, to our knowledge the first in a non-human animal.

Optimal traffic organization in ants under crowded conditions

Article Abstract:

Foraging ants form attractive trails that support the exploitation of initially unknown food sources in almost the minimum possible time. An experimental study of ants confronted with two alternative routes is done and the results of this study are presented.
