GABAa receptor alpha4 subunit suppression prevents withdrawal properties of an endogenous steroid

Article Abstract:

The progesterone hormone is converted to 3alpha-OH-5alpha-pregnan-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP) in the brain. It acts like a sedative by enhancing GABA function. The symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are linked to sharp falls in the circulating levels of progesterone and levels of 3alpha,5alpha-THP. A progesterone-withdrawal paradigm, mimicking PMS in a rat model is reported. It was found that PMS symptoms could be partly attributable to change sin GABAA expression.

Combating cholesterol

Article Abstract:

New drugs such as squalestatin and zaragozic acids are developed to treat atherosclerosis, a chronic disease associated with the vascular system. The disease is a fatal one and is caused by high level of cholesterol in the blood serum. The new drugs inhibit the production of cholesterol within a cell, reducing the overall level of cholesterol in the blood. The two new drugs are obtained from the cultures of Sporormiella intermedia and Phoma species.
