Ovulated oocytes in adult mice derive from non-circulating germ cells

Article Abstract:

Research in reproductive biology reveal that in female mammals, all surviving germ cells enter meiosis at the end of fetal development and as a result, the postnatal ovary harbors a limited supply of oocytes that cannot be replenished or regenerated if lost due to injury or disease. Reports have challenged this view, suggesting instead that oocyte production is maintained through continual seeding of the ovary by circulating bone marrow derived germ cells.

Developmental reprogramming after chromosome transfer into mitotic mouse zygotes

Article Abstract:

The mouse zygotes temporarily arrested in mitosis can be easily used to support the somatic cell reprogramming after the chromosomes takes place to provide full-term development of cloned animals. The study shows that similarly even the human zygotes can be widely employed for the creation of patient-derived human embryonic stem cells.

Derivation of embryonic germ cells and male gametes from embryonic stem cells

Article Abstract:

The derivation of egg sperm cells of the mouse from a founder population of primordial germ cells that are set aside early in embryogenesis is discussed. This provides an accessible vitro model system for studies of germline epigenetic modification and mammalian gametogenesis.
