Article Abstract:
With the present entrepreneurial spirit in scientific research, the Salk Institute has maintained an image of conservatism and excellence. Its publications have four times the citation impact of those from the nearby and more populous Scripps Institute. However, its financial resources barely allows the institute to meet its research needs. It has traditionally depended on the excellence of its staff to bring in generous grants to augment federal sources. However, the spirit of expansion is now in the air, along with it a growing acceptance for the need to dispel the aloof image that the institute has fostered for so many years.

Article Abstract:
Genentech Inc was founded less than 20 years ago by Bob Swanson and Herb Boyer, who, over a mug of beer decided to set up a company which is now at the forefront of the biotechnology industry. The spirit which founded the company lives on, with a hands-off management style and a research and development program which moves at tremendous speed and minimum bureaurocracy. The young staff are imbued with a strong sense of identity and corporate pride, but maintain an ebullience and sense of humor which has made the work environment uniquely Californian.
