Oxford professor faces business link inquiry

Article Abstract:

Roy Anderson has been suspended from his zoology professorship at Oxford University, England, and from his post as director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases during an inquiry into his behaviour in relation to the appointment of a faculty member in the zoology department. Concerns raised during this inquiry have also prompted Oxford University and the Wellcome Trust to investigate Anderson's business activities. One area of investigation will be the connections between Anderson, his company International Biomedical and Health Sciences Consortium and the drug concern Abbott Laboratories.

Culling plans put future of red deer study in jeopardy

Article Abstract:

Scottish Natural Heritage is considering reducing red deer numbers on the island of Rum, which it owns, from 1,500 to between 300 and 400. It believes that woodland lost through overgrazing must be recreated in order to restore the natural balance of native woodland, open-ground vegetation, wildlife and scrub. Scientists fear that this policy could in the long term have a negative impact on an important study of red deer population dynamics being undertaken on Rum. Scottish Natural Heritage recognizes the importance of Rum as an outdoor laboratory, but wishes to limit future research.

Britain faces up to a transparency review

Article Abstract:

Academics in Britain are concerned about the transparency and accountability review of research which is being introduced into eight pilot universities. Universities will have to cost staff activities by department, subject and type of research sponsor. The review will mean increased paperwork and closer scrutiny of spending decisions, placing additional burdens on an already under-funded system.
