P53 polymorphism and risk of cervical cancer

Article Abstract:

Work by Storey and colleagues suggested that the allele encoding arginine in the codon-72 polymorphism of the p53 gene, may be a significant risk factor in cancer development, particularly those linked with the human papilloma virus (HPV). The polymorphism in leukocyte DNA from a larger sample of cancer patients has been analyzed, but no significant over-representation was found.

Apostatic selection by blue jays produces balanced polymorphism in virtual prey

Article Abstract:

Apostatic selection, whereby predators overlook rare prey types and consume an excess of abundant ones, is thought to contribute to the maintenance of pre polymorphisms. Results of a new technique, incorporating computer-generated displays, studying blue jays hunting for cryptic moths, are reported, showing that detection of cryptic prey does involve apostatic selection.

Are lemmings prey or predators?

Article Abstract:

A number of statistical tests have been applied to three lemming datasets, with a comparison being made with data for cyclic voles. It appears that a single mechanism probably does not give the universal explanation for all cyclic rodent dynamics.
