Partnerships and mechanisms of divorce in the great skua

Article Abstract:

The dissolution of bird partnerships is attributed to either incompatibility, with both birds seeking a more compatible mate, or the desire of one bird to search for a more successful partner or territory. A new study investigates partnership composition in the North Atlantic great skua and investigates the incompatibility and better option theories. Results show that most skua divorces are prompted by female desertion, with the abandoned male having difficulty in re-pairing, It is concluded that better option theory explains the result.

A fine-scale time budget of Cape gannets provides insights into the foraging strategies of coastal seabirds

Article Abstract:

The foraging behavior of the coastal seabirds, Cape gannets, was investigated using a new tool. The results suggest that the Cape gannets did not use a single strategy and the organization of their foraging activity was relatively flexible with relation to prey availability.

Predation as a cost of sexual communication in nocturnal seabirds: an experimental approach using acoustic signals

Article Abstract:

Behaviour such as sexual communication exposes the animal to the risk of predation. A study of the brown skua, an avian predator, investigates whether predation technique uses the mate attraction calls of petrel colonial seabirds.
