Penetrating the peroxisome

Article Abstract:

Peroxisomes are membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic cells. X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is known to be associated with a genetically caused single-enzyme deficiency in peroxisomes. The disease has been known to be associated with impaired beta-oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) and was further localized to low levels of the enzyme VLCFA-CoA synthetase. ALD was also found to be linked to position 28 on the long arm of the X chromosome. The protein encoded here, ALDP, is a membrane transporter protein thought to import VLCFA-CoAE synthetase.
